The theory test

The theory test for cars is an assessment of your knowledge based on the Highway Code, plus your ability to recognise hazards quickly.

The test comes in two parts. Both parts must be passed at the same sitting. If you fail either part, you will have to take the test again.

Part 1 is multiple choice questions based in the information in the Highway Code. There are 50 questions in total. You must get at least 43 correct answers to pass this part of the test.

Part 2 is called 'Hazard Perception'. A simulation of a real scenario is played out on a computer screen. As the clip plays, a series of potential hazards will develop. You have to spot these quickly and click the mouse to confirm. You must score at least 44 out of 75 in order to be successful.

Theory Test

Once the theory test is passed successfully, you have 2 years to pass the Practical Test. After two years, your theory test certificate expires. If this happens, you will have to sit the theory test again.
